Who are we?

We are the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Paediatric Psychology Service. We are a team of Paediatric Clinical Psychologists and Assistant Psychologists.

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

Someone who listens and talks to people and helps them with how they are thinking and feeling, especially when things feel hard.

What does 'paediatric psychology' mean?

Helping children to understand and cope with any difficulties they might have because they are poorly, or have a health condition.

Why children might see a Psychologist?

Children see Paediatric Psychologists for lots of different reasons. For example:

  • You might be poorly and finding this really hard 🤒
  • Struggling to cope at home 🏠 or in school 🏫
  • Be worried about hospital visits or treatments 🏥
  • Need help to understand how you feel 💛

Remember

Lots of children have problems and worries and might need help to solve them, or to worry less about them.

We listen to how you are feeling and help you to find ways to feel better and enjoy doing the things that really matter to you in your life.

You can talk to us about anything and our meetings are private. Sometimes we have to tell other people we work with about what you have said, to make sure we are keeping you safe and healthy. We will always try to talk to you first if we need to do this.

What happens when you see us?

❓ When we first meet you we might ask you some questions to get to know you, such as:

  • Different things that have happened in your life
  • What things you enjoy doing
  • If there is anything you are worried about

👍 After your appointment we will decide together if there is anything we can help you with.

👪 You can talk to us with your mum, dad or grown up, or you can talk to us on your own.

🕐 We will usually see you every couple of weeks for about an hour, but this can sometimes change.

Where will we see you?

A lot of the time you will come to our building which is in a place called Monkmoor Campus 🏢

But sometimes you can't come to us so we can come to you. This might be at home 🏠, in school 🏫, or in hospital 🏥

We can also talk to you on the phone 📞 or over video calls 💻

Here are some things we might do together:

Creating a mood diary 📒

Making feelings charts 😁 🙁

Drawing 🎨

Talking 😀💬
